This is such a simple, delicious and fun dessert. The trifle is made with layers of bite-sized angel food cake, a pudding/cool whip mixture and fruit layers. It can easily be a no bake option by picking up a premade loaf of angel food cake.
Growing up this was a frequent summer dessert at our house in the summer months. It is a favorite of my family as well. It is light and refreshing – a perfect treat for a hot day.
Take this to your Fourth of July gathering to impress your friends with your pretty and festive layered dessert. Design the top however you like: star, flag, scattered and rustic.
Outside of the holiday it is still a popular BBQ or potluck dish and easy to put together.
4th of July Trifle {No Bake Option}
Ingredients
- 1 loaf angel food cake premade or bake one cake per box directions
- 1 small package instant vanilla pudding
- 8 oz carton cool whip
- 1 1/4 cups milk
- 1 carton strawberries hulled and sliced (more as desired)
- 1 pint blue berries more as desired
Instructions
- Break angel food cake into bite size pieces
- Whisk pudding and milk together until smooth, fold in cool whip
- Place 1/3 of angel food cake bites in bottom of small trifle bowl or other clear glass bowl as desired
- Top with 1/3 of pudding mixture
- Place a layer of fruit on top (you can do a mixture of both strawberries and blueberries or do individual layers like I did to give a more distinct red, white and blue pattern)
- Repeat layering with remaining ingredients.
- For the top layer decorate berries as desired. I did a star pattern this time. Other ideas: flag pattern or assorted for a more rustic look
- Refrigerate until ready to serve. Best served the same day as made.
