Well, summer break is here! To our family that means swimming, biking, going to lots of parks, and READING! I love encouraging our kids to read a lot during hot summer afternoons. We try to have some quiet bedroom time every afternoon, and during this time, we all try to read lots of great books.
In the past, we have participated in our local library’s reading program, and it was great. But as my kids have gotten a little older, they are no longer interested in some of the prizes offered. So this summer, I decided to make our own summer reading challenge. It is pretty simple, which is the way I like things to be in the summer. Maybe your family would like to join us!
Here are our rules:
- The goal is to read 100 picture books or 100 chapters of chapter books by the end of the month. (We are starting our challenge on June 1st, but of course you could start it anytime). This equals to about 3 books/chapters a day. I will be reading to my two little guys.
- Record your books/chapters on the reading chart (print yours below). I like this method better than just check marks because it works in a little handwriting.
- At the end of the month, the children (and adults- I’m participating too!) who have completed the challenge will earn the reward. For us, I think it will be going out for supper, but of course you could make this anything that fits your family well.
