“Grandma, can we make these cookies?” Anna asked as she pulled out the cookie cookbook from her overnight bag. “I’ve been looking in this cookbook for cookie recipes we can make together while I’m staying with you.”
Shelby had snapped this photo a few days before her arrival, preparing for her cookie baking with Grandma. 🙂 When I viewed the pic, it truly blessed my heart.
We sat down together on the couch and perused the recipes and pictures she had previously marked at home. We came to a conclusion. We loved chocolate and these looked yummy. Decision made. Step 1 accomplished.
Step 2: “Grandma, I need an apron, too.” (I always throw on an apron, tie it in the front and slide a kitchen towel through the quickly made belt.) “And, Grandma, I need a towel, too.” I smiled….touched my heart that she wanted to proceed just like Grandma. Yes, those little ones are watching and listening to us more than we can imagine.
Step 3: We read off the ingredients from the cookbook and pulled them all out onto the counter. Anna quickly pulled her chair over beside me to start our work. She was intense about it all. 🙂
“Grandma, may I crack the eggs? ” Grandma, may I put in all the ingredients?” “Grandma, may I roll the balls in powdered sugar?” “Of course you can.” “You bet.” “Yes!” I quickly answered to every question. Anna was focused and determined to make the cookies from start to finish. And this Grandma loved every minute of it, from tying on the apron to sweeping up the powdered sugar on the chair to floor. And the last and most important question was, “Grandma, may I please lick the beater?” “ABSOLUTELY! That’s the very best part of baking cookies, isn’t it?” 🙂
