Decadent Apple Crisp

Have you made apple crisp yet, this (almost)fall?  You won’t be disappointed with this buttery sweet apple goodness dessert.  I was in the fall baking mood the other day.  We had gobs of extra apples that needed to get used up…so apple crisp was the answer!  The secret with this Crisp is sautéing the apples a bit before baking – then don’t be shy with adding that crisp topping – it’s definitely the best part 🙂

Apple crisp is a signature fall favorite, even better served a la mode!  Smell the cinnamon and apples baking then enjoy the buttery, oatmeal, sweet topping! This recipe is a perfect balance of half apples and half topping.  Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, and enjoy the terrific lingering aroma in your home!

Decadent Apple Crisp

I made this twice this week.  Once for a smaller serving, placed in apples (all you have to do is scoop out the inside of the apples and use them as bowls). Then bake for 10-15mins.  The other occasion was for our Tailgate Party – out in the soybean field.  I made (2) large 9 x13s and quadrupled the recipe.  It was a decadent treat as the daylight was slowly fading… I’m guessing those farmers weren’t too disappointed about it either. 🙂

Ingredients
  • Apple Mixture:
  • 4 apples, peeled and chopped (approx. 4-5 c. I used Jonagold)
  • 4 T butter
  • ⅓ c. brown sugar
  • ½ t. cinnamon
  • Crumble:
  • ½ c. flour
  • ½ c. oats
  • ⅓ c. brown sugar
  • ¼ c. sugar
  • ¼ t. salt
  • ½ t. cinnamon
  • 4 T. butter
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. First, prepare the crumble topping. In a medium bowl whisk together flour, oats, brown sugar, sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Cut in the butter with a pastry knife, or two forks, or with your hands until mixture is crumbly. Set aside.
  3. Peel and chop 4 of the apples. Add chopped apples, butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon to a medium sauce pan and sauté over medium heat for 8-10 minutes or until apples are tender. Remove from heat.
  4. Fill baking dish (8x8) with apple mixture. Top with a generous amount of crumble topping.
  5. Bake for 15 minutes until crumble topping is crispy. Serve warm and top with ice cream and caramel sauce if desired. Enjoy!
