My family and I have now lived in Southern California for exactly four months this week. The time has really flown by because we’ve met so many wonderful people who’ve welcomed us into their lives and we’ve visited many fun and amazing places. God has really been good to us.
One of our favorite nearby places to visit during these past few months is the town of La Jolla, California. This is pronounced La Hoy-ya, and is one of the first cities north of San Diego. The coastline views here are absolutely gorgeous, and my pictures really don’t do them justice.
We have three favorite spots here so far.
This is really an amazing spot because there are so many interesting things going on. Every time we’ve been there, there have been kayaking groups and scuba divers. During the month of December, there is even a swim with the sharks opportunity.
There are several interesting caves to explore and my boys are captivating by the many helicopters flying overhead.
The best part of Seal Cove though is that there are usually seals and seal lions sunning on the rocks. As you can see from this picture, people get pretty close to these amazingly cute animals. But we’ve been warned that they can get pretty mean to protect their babies, so we watched from the fence.
My kids are fascinated with the sea lions. Here they were sitting, listening, and watching for a long time.
They also love climbing down the rocks to take in the crashing waves. We Midwesterners are all still dumbstruck at the magnitude and beauty of the ocean.
Just down the path from the cove is Shell Beach. This beach is named for the thousands of these shells found all over the beach. The kids and I were surprised, though, that the shells are firmly attached to the ground! Why? How? We have some research to do!
Another interesting aspect of Shell Beach are the many tide pools. The kids found crabs and fish that they had never seen before. They learned so much and have a wonderful time investigating God’s marine biology.
We loved this carving in one of the sandstone rocks.
Birch Aquarium is just up the road from Seal Cove. It is a remarkable place, nestled right up against the shoreline. The kids got to interact with sea urchins and starfish. They actually got to touch them! We saw sharks and sea horses and many, many vibrantly colored beautiful sea animals.
The views from the aquarium are stunning!
The sea is His, for it was He who made it, And His hands formed the dry land. Psalm 95:5
