My family uses My Father’s World for our home school curriculum.  One thing that I love about it is that is uses a 4-day school week.  That leaves Fridays to be a make-up day, light day, or field trip day.  This year, my kids and I are going to try to take field trips around our city on Fridays. We are challenging ourselves to try a lot of new places.

Summary:

For field trip #2,  we visited the Des Moines Art Center.  We learned about art in fashion, Andy Warhol, and different media used in sculptures.  It was especially interesting for the kids to see an impressionist era painting after studying Monet and Manet last year.  We also enjoyed seeing a piece by Georgia O’Keefe, another artist that we have studied.

Cost:

Free

Highs:

A wide variety of art (sculptures, paintings, statues, art from different periods, etc.)

Lows:

A nude sculpture (yikes!), and staff who seemed a little uncomfortable with children.
