Several Sundays ago, my daughter was begging me for making brunch together. We had set forth our menu of scrambled eggs, sausage, french toast, smoothie, and fresh fruit. As soon as we got home from church, we got cookin’ in the kitchen.
She wanted to make the French Toast all on her own – which she did – other than we agreed that I would handle the homemade syrup part. She was elated crack the eggs and to flip the toast when it was ready. While she was carefully watching, I was stirring the syrup until it boiled. Alas, our brunch was ready.
The final touches were needed – powdered sugar – cinnamon – and the freshly cut-up bananas and apples. Our joint effort was a hit! My only problem is that eveyone now asks for French Toast every Sunday…perhaps we’ve started a new tradition 🙂
On another note, this cherished recipe was shared with me years ago from a sweet college friend. She made this for me one day, and graciously passed it on. I have made this for co-workers, friends, and family, who equally have enjoyed this delicious syrup.
French Toast with Homemade Syrup
Ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 T. flour
- 1/2 t. cinnamon
- 1/8 t. salt
- 2/3 cup water
- 3 T. butter
Instructions
- Mix ingredients together in a saucepan over medium high heat. Once brought to a boil, continue stirring with a whisk for 3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in butter.
- Because the syrup is so sweet it pairs nicely with bananas and apples.
