Presidents’ Day is next week, and my kids are especially into the presidents this year. We are studying American History with our curriculum this year, and also, I think they are very interested because of the recent inauguration. Today I thought I’d share a few favorite books and activities to bring into your home for this Presidents’ Day.
So You Want To Be President– This book is witty, clever, and funny. We learned that Teddy Roosevelt had a zoo for his children and that six of our presidents were named James! This book is so fun!
George Washington’s World– this chapter book is truly engaging and excellent. We have been learning all about George Washington and his contemporaries, including Benjamin Franklin, King Louis XV, and King George II. We have really been intrigued by Washington’s humility; he never wanted to be president and only accepted the job as a way of serving his new nation.
Presidents Place Mat– this is so simple, but everytime I put this placemat out during a meal, some great discussion arises. Questions such as “Why was Franklin Roosevelt president for so long?” and “What is a Whig?” have been very fun to talk about.
George Washington and Abraham Lincoln by Ingri & Edgar Parin D’Aulaire- all of the biographical books by these authors are truly treasures. My kids LOVE them. They tell the story of our presidents when they were children. George was a backwoods Virginia farm kid and Abe was a boy who lost his mother and taught and himself to read. So enduring and lovely! You must read these!
And finally- a fun, and whimsical way to celebrate Presidents’ Day: Make An Abraham Lincoln Log Cabin. We did this project a couple of years ago, and the kids had a blast and still talk about it. Easy, fun, and memorable.

Also, let’s remember to pray for our president!
I Timothy 2:1-3 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior…” -1 Timothy 2:1-3
