Tonight we had Jedi Burgers with Light Sabers for supper. Ok, ok, we really had Southwest Ranch Sloppy Joes (Jedi Burgers) with French Fries (Light Sabers).
We finished our school year today (yay!!) and to celebrate, we decided to watch the new Star Wars movie tonight after chores were done and supper had been eaten. The kids were doing their chores, and I was cooking supper (the sloppy joes and french fries). My son came into the kitchen and said, “I am doing all of my chores so fast so we can get to the movie sooner! And what are we having for supper?”
Suddenly an idea popped into my head, and I replied “Jedi Burgers with Light Sabers, of course.” His face lit up, and he quickly ran off to tell his brothers and sisters all about the EXCITING menu.
It was a good reminder to me to try to make ordinary Thursday evenings with sloppy joes and french fries just a little special. Sometimes it just takes so little effort to make a great memory for the kids, but it’s easy for me to hurry and to not stop long enough to make things fun.
So, back to the Jedi burgers… they really are so delicious. I usually call these Southwest Ranch Sloppy Joes. They are full of mouth-watering flavors and topped with melty cheese. They just take a few minutes to make, but are filling and satisfying. My whole family loves them.
- 2 pounds hamburger, browned
- 1 can black beans, drained
- 1 packet Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing mix
- ¼ C salsa
- 8 hamburger buns
- 8 Cheddar or American cheese slices
- Brown hamburger.
- Add beans, ranch dressing packet, and salsa to meat and stir together.
- Preheat broiler.
- Line a baking sheet with buns, and place about ½ C of the meat mixture on each bun.
- Top with cheese.
- Broil until cheese is melted.
- Serve with fries
So, from now on Southwest Sloppy Joes will probably be called Jedi Burgers at our house. I will love it.
Now, tell me, what are some simple ways that you make ordinary dinners fun for your family? I’d love to learn some new ways!

I love this reminder to take an extra second to make even the mundane and normal into a “fun” memory! My boys are all grown, so I’m out of chances for now (until grandkids!!) but I cherish the stories they tell about the times that I did make a “fun” memory with them. It reminds me that even though I may have failed often, God was faithful all the while, weaving his ways into every effort we as parents made to raise them right. Keep up the good and faithful work knowing that God is alongside you all the way!

Hi Cindy-
Thank you for your encouraging words. I find a lot of rest in remembering God’s faithfulness and nearness in motherhood. Thanks for reading!
