For Christmas my AWANA girls received one of my favorite and beloved movies, “The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry.” Gavin McCleod (the TV show “Love Boat” captain) plays lead with Robert Guillaume. I saw this movie years ago and thought, “I need this one in my video library.” Well, I finally bought one for me and gave them out for gifts, as well. Last time I watched it with my grandchildren, Addison was tearful throughout the movie and at the end said, “Gramma, that’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. Can we watch it again?” “We certainly can,” came my joy-filled response. I’m waiting for the chance to view it again with her, hopefully soon.
The story takes place back a few decades. Gavin plays a widower in a small town. He is an older Christian gentleman who has made a decision…….a decision to impact his neighborhood for Jesus Christ. He is rich in wisdom and kindness, and he is ready with the message of the gospel and living out his faith for all to see. It really is a heartwarming experience for the entire family.
The back of the DVD cover reads, “Dustin and his two best buddies are twelve year olds looking forward to a summer of fun in 1970. When Dustin mows the lawn of seventy-five-year-old Jonathan Sperry, a man he has seen at church, a unique friendship develops. What happens the rest of the summer is something Dustin and his friends will never forget! An inspiring film for all ages.”
I’m not going to tell you anymore about it but I do hope you will take time to rent it or buy it for your own library. (The DVDs were very inexpensive to buy.) You’ll be glad you did. And you’ll want to watch it more than once………with popcorn, of course.
The other night at AWANA, one of my 5th grade girls motioned me over and half-whispered to me, “I watched that movie the other night…..the one that you gave me for Christmas.” “You did??” I replied, with a smile and surprised look on my face. “And, I asked Jesus to be my Savior, too.” My heart melted and my eyes welled up. I gave her a hug and told her, “Congratulations! We are now both daughters of The King!” She smiled and tears filled her eyes, as well.

P.S It’s based on a true story!! That makes it even better. 🙂
Enjoy………………..and don’t forget the popcorn. Perhaps a little chocolate with the popcorn. Maybe some licorice and a cute little Coke in a glass bottle. Oh, and be sure to invite all your friends. You’ll be glad you did. 🙂
