Are you ready to curl up with a fantastic biography? Maybe you’d like to share an amazing and true story with your kids or grandkids? Need a stocking-stuffer or an inexpensive and intriguing hostess gift this holiday season?
The kids and I just finished reading Nate Saint: On a Wing and a Prayer, and it is compelling, heart-wrenching, and hopeful all at the same time. It was the kind of book that the kids said, “Just one more chapter, Mom!”
Are you familiar with the story of Nate Saint? I wasn’t until his son, Steve Saint, visited my college and told the amazing story of how his dad, Nate, was speared to death by a man from the stone-age Auca tribe in the Amazon Basin of Ecuador. But get this… Steve Saint was visiting my school with a man from that tribe, a man named Mincaye. And this is the very man that speared his father Nate, the subject of this book to death. How did these two men go from being bitter enemies to friends who travel around together telling their story? Well, you’ll just have to read this book to find out!
This book is part of the Christian Heroes: Then & Now collection, which is one of my family’s favorite series. I love to bolster my kids’ faith by sharing true stories of God’s faithfulness to his servants through history. I wrote about the Corrie ten Boom biography here and about some others that we’ve enjoyed here.
And if you’d like to hear more about Nate Saint’s story, check out this powerful video by his son, Steve.
P.S. While I read to the kids, sometimes they like to play with clay and make something from the story. Addison made an Aucu tribe member. Note his spear and loin cloth. These kids crack me up.
