Today I want share with you our favorite reading books. I have used Pathway with my kids starting in first or second grade, and we love them. After a child has completed Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, we then move on to these Pathway Readers.
Pathway Readers are plain and simple, which I love. A problem that I’ve encountered with my children who are beginning to read is that they will often look at the picture in a book and then try to guess the words. This doesn’t help build phonics or fluency skills, and can be a frustration to me. These simple readers are printed in black and white, and only have a picture on every fourth page or so. With these, the picture guessing problem is solved!
The stories are about a farm family who enjoys working and playing together. There is the occasional rule broken, which leads to learning about obedience and God’s ways. The stories, filled with farm adventures, animals, and friends are wholesome and interesting to children. A bonus is that my kids love them as much as I do.
The Pathway Reading Series offers readers and workbooks that range from first to eighth grade. We also use the workbooks, which offer very thorough phonics and vocabulary training. We found ours here.
