The 4th of July is only is only a few days away. I love this holiday! I love the patriotism shown in our community, county and state and nation. Will you go to a parade? Watch fireworks? Fly a flag or dawn a banner? Red, white and blue and beautiful colors together—makes me smile. Makes me grateful. Makes me thankful. Makes me tear up when I think of the significance in this day and these celebrations. Friend, you are needed to cheer at the parade, help with the float, make the fried chicken, homemade ice cream or light the sparkler? Together, we have so much to celebrate in this great country. For the men and women who have given their lives for our freedom, for those who have sacrificed for working hard to do their job and protect our country in the military, and so on and so one, we give you thanks and cheer you on! Where would we be today without your decision to serve?
I tried something new in making fried chicken, so thought I’d share with you.
Fried chicken has always been on my top 5 list! As a little girl, I always asked for fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy for my birthday meal. How about you?? And as you all know, fried chicken is that special entrée for so many Americans for Independence Day. Fareway, our local, wonderful grocery store had drumsticks on sale, so I purchased a couple pounds and boy I’m glad I did! Their meat is always tender and delicious, so way to go, Fareway!
I pulled out the largest skillet and set the temp on the stovetop to medium hi. Next I grabbed two mixing bowls. One for flour and one for buttermilk.
When purchasing the drumsticks, make certain there is plenty of meat on the bone.
By dipping the chicken in buttermilk the flour coating sticks so much better.
Sometimes I brown both sides then stick the chicken in the oven. This time I kept it on top of the stove and watched, giving both sides a good browning. This method takes a good hour to hour, 15 minutes.
And yes, if you’re going to have fried chicken, there must be gravy! Hallelujah for gravy! 🙂
The meal was delicious! I’m not going to tell you how many drumsticks I had. I’m just not. And yes, there were more than firsts involved in the gravy, too. 🙂
And yes, I will be making this recipe for the 4th of July.
How about you? I’d love to hear some of your meal traditions for Independence Day. Give me a holler!
Oh…..check out the cherry pie recipe below to go with the chicken. You’ll be glad you did! 😉
Give it a try before the 4th and see what you think.
Enjoy!
- 2 lbs of chicken. Today I used drumsticks.
- ½ C vegetable oil (or a combination oil with a little olive oil)
- 1 C buttermilk
- 1½ C flour
- 1 t seasoned salt
- 1 t salt
- 1 t pepper
- Place oil in large skillet on medium high heat. Place buttermilk in one bowl and flour, and seasoned salt in another bowl.
- Pat off excess liquid from chicken and place one piece at a time in the buttermilk then roll in flour. Carefully place each piece in oil and fry to a medium golden brown. Turn and brown other side. Turn burner down to medium and continue to cook for approximately forty five minutes to an hour. To ensure doneness, slice open a piece near the bone and make sure there is no pink coloring on the meat or bone.
And how about some biscuits? They are quick and easy and absolutely delicious!
Happy Independence Day! Hope you celebrate with all your heart!
