It is November and once again Thanksgiving and the holidays are creeping up on me. (Yes, even with Covid and crazy 2020, it still snuck up). This time of year is one of my favorite times but I also find myself easily getting lost in the the to-dos, end of the year books, holiday prep and so on. Last year I made a conscious effort while the kids were home over Thanksgiving break to put all those lists and tasks aside and do activities together. One of those activities we did was make these Thanksgiving Peanut Butter Ball Turkeys. They were equally as fun as they were delicious. We also doubled them as a tabletop decor with one placed at each persons table setting.
You basically take your standard peanut butter ball recipe and decorate as a turkey prior to the chocolate setting. The peanut butter ball recipe below works well because it is a little thicker of a peanut butter mixture and helps support the candy better. Be sure to allow your peanut butter balls to cool before dipping and decorating or you may have some sagging feathers 😉
Thanksgiving Peanut Butter Ball Turkeys
Ingredients
- 1 cup creamy peanut butter
- 1 cup butter, room temperature
- 1 1/4 cup crushed graham crackers
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 16 oz white almond bark
- 12 oz chocolate chips semi, milk chocolate or combo
- fall colored M&M's and/or reeces pieces
- candy eyeballs
- candy corn
Instructions
- In your stand mixer bowl combine peanut butter and butter, mix on medium speed until smooth
- Turn to low speed and add in powdered sugar and graham crackers, mix evenly. (mixture will be thick)
- With a cookie scoop or a tablespoon, portion out the mixture and roll into balls. Place them on a parchment lined baking sheet and place in the refrigerator and chill for apprx 30 min or more
- Near the end of chill time melt the chocolate and almond bark together according to package directions until melted and smooth. Be careful not to scorch
- Using a fork, dip peanut butter ball into the melted chocolate, tapping off the excess and place back on your parchment lined
- Immediately upon placing peanut butter ball on parchment paper press eyeballs on, push in candy corn for the feathers and our candies for a nose as pictured.
- Once all peanut butter balls are dipped and decorated place baking sheet in refrigerator for 15 minutes or until set. Once set, place in an airtight container and store in refrigerator. Enjoy!
As you can see, my boys got quite creative with their turkey making. Definitely not Pinterest worthy turkeys, but fun and memorable which I will take over perfect any day.
And just to prove that life doesn’t go as planned…right after I snapped this picture, that cute little guy on the right threw up and this batch of peanut butter ball turkeys had to hit the trash. But to no avail, we cleaned it all up, sanitized and the older two enjoyed it so much we created more to enjoy at Thanksgiving.
This holiday season as we are rushing around trying to get everything done, I pray you will find the time to be intentional and focus on your relationships, even if it is something as simple as making a fun holiday treat with your kids…twice. 😉
