We made the trip over to Pella this weekend. I love going to Tulip Time! It is a welcome spring tradition. The array of colorful tulips are astounding, with over 70 varieties of tulips planted each year. Pella is a charming town with its brick streets and European style architecture – not to mention, the weather was perfect.
A close childhood friend now resides in Pella. Three of her four kiddos were in the parade dressed in their authentic Dutch attire. Adorable! The outfits are all hand sewn. As we sipped on our cold lemonades from the grassy square, we marveled at the floats that went by…these masterpieces take lots of work and planning to come together!
I was especially in awe with ‘Maria’s Tea Time’ float – they even made steam to come from the spout of the tea kettle – pretty impressive!
Here is the Tulip Queen riding in the horse drawn carriage – filled with cascades of tulips. Then came the street sweepers, the mothers and babies, the Burgemeister (Pella’s honorary mayor), and several marching bands.
Of course, I can’t leave yet without stopping at Jaarsma Bakery. The line was long, but well worth the wait! It was loaded with almond cake, dutch letters, puff pillows, cream horns, streusels and more (yes, I was the kid in the candy shop!).
Whether you come for Tulip Time or just a casual stop while traveling, the trip to Pella is well worth it!
